Cognitive Behavioral Psychology of NY offers a range of psychological services including:

Individual Psychological Treatment
Adult, Adolescent and Child Therapy

Individual cognitive-behavioral therapy sessions focus on specific symptoms, problems or goals. Sessions may occur in the office or out in the "real world" depending on the nature of the problem. (For example, sessions addressing a fear of heights may involve going to various tall buildings for exposure). Homework assignments are often given to enable the patient to work on their problems in between sessions and facilitate maximum improvement.

When working with children, parents are often involved in the treatment.  The amount of parental involvement depends on the age of the child as well as the nature of the problems being experience by the child and the family. Typically, older children will have more time alone with the therapist, while treatment of younger children will require more parental involvement.  Parental involvement may consist of simply working with the parents to oversee the child's treatment or more involvement in the form of parent training, behavior management skills training, or other family based interventions.

Family Therapy
Many problems either involve or affect multiple members of a family. Whether the main problem is general family dynamics and communication or one family member's problem is affecting other members, family therapy may help. Sessions may occur at different times with one member, several members, or all members of a family, as needed.

Assessments
Intelligence / Academic Testing
Intelligence and academic testing is used to identify children with cognitive or processing problems such as learning disabilities and mental retardation. It is also used to identify gifted children.  Testing results that show evidence of cognitive problems are often used to receive special accommodations on standardized tests such as the SAT, LSAT, and GMAT.

Neuro-psychological Testing
Neuro-psychological testing is used to further investigate an individual's cognitive and processing problems.  It is useful in identifying some of the more complex learning difficulties, auditory, visual, motor, or tactile processing problems, memory deficits, and attention difficulties. There are many neuro-psychological tests which each look at different brain functions.  The assessment includes a battery of tests tailored to the particular problems of each patient.

Diagnostic Testing
Diagnostic testing is used when a patient's diagnosis is unclear and clarification is needed. Testing can range from disorder-specific testing (such as testing for ADHD) to more general testing to clarify complex diagnoses, reveal hidden problems, or identify personality disorders. These tests may include structured clinical interviews, diagnostic questionnaires, personality tests, and neuro-psychological tests.

Home Visits
Some patients are either unable to go to a doctor's office because they are homebound due to their symptoms or find that their symptoms (such as hoarding) would be better treated at home.  Home visits are offered to these individuals.
